North Sea + Berlin

Beginning of the End

It's unbelievable that I have less than 3 weeks left in Germany. I've done a lot since the last time I posted, so I'll try to sum everything up.

I visited two of my friends studying at University of Edinburgh in Scotland the second weekend in May, since I was possibly going to attend this fall (I deferred last year). It was amazing to see them after so long (almost 2 years since we met in Nice) and I fell in love with the city. I was only there for a few days, but I saw a lot and had a really good time. I emailed University of Wisconsin-Madison in April and said I wasn't going to be attending in the fall because I decided to study in Europe, so while I visited Edinburgh I was deciding between the university there and Maastricht University in the Netherlands. It was a really hard decision but I'll be starting in Maastricht this fall getting my BA in European Studies. So I'll be back in Europe in August!

I had my local AFS committees EOS (End of Stay) camp in May as well, where I got to see and say goodbye to the other AFSers in my area. It was in Tübingen this time so it was a lot better location wise than the other camps. I also went to Europa Park for a day in May which was amazing...

We had a two week break the last week of May and the first week of June, and I was lucky enough to make a trip to the North Sea with my host family. It was great to see another part of Germany and I'm so grateful to my host family for making that happen. The weather wasn't so great and it was a lot colder than southern Germany, but it was really pretty... There's a lot of farms and fields and it's really flat. There are also tons of wind turbines which was cool to see since there aren't many in the U.S. We ate a lot of fish and spent time near the beach and around the area. We went to Norderney for a day, which is an island off the coast, and we also did a little walking tour in the tidal area along the beach. Overall it was really nice, even if the weather wasn't great.

I had my end of stay camp for CBYX/PPP in Berlin from June 10-14th. I took a train Wednesday morning to Berlin and arrived alone with the other CBYXers from the Northeast. There were 48 of us at the camp, and it was incredibly busy. The first day we arrived we went on a bus tour of Berlin, which was pretty much the exact same thing I did when I went to Berlin in October. It was still really interesting, but after traveling for about 6 hours I was exhausted, and so was everyone else. On Thursday we went to the American Embassy along with all the other CBYXers from around the U.S. We had to wait a while to get into the building, but we were met by donuts and American soda (my first root beer in 10 months!) so that was really nice. We were addressed by the American ambassador to Germany and got to listen to an acapella group from Harvard. We were there for a while, but it was really nice to meet and talk to the other CBYXers from other areas in the US and to compare our experiences. We also talked to people working for the foreign service, which was really interesting and something that I'll maybe look into. It was kind of similar to what we heard at the Department of State in D.C, it seemed a little like they were trying to get us interested in working for the foreign service. Overall it was really interesting and something that I would never have been able to experience without CBYX. Afterwards the AFSers all went to a museum together, the Topographie des Terrors (The Topography of Terror), which is a museum on the history between 1933-1945 mostly detailing the history of oppression under the Nazis. We had a guided tour through the museum which was definitely more detailed than a normal tour would have been so it was really interesting. During our free time we generally had more AFS oriented activities about readjusting in the U.S and reflecting on our time in Germany.  On Friday we got up at 4:30 am to get ready to go to the Bundestag. We were all lined up in front of security around 7 with all the other CBYXers, and took a huge group photo in front of the Reichstag building. We were lucky enough to see a debate which was really interesting, but I think everyone was so exhausted so it was a bit difficult to concentrate... Afterwards we had a little reception (with well needed coffee) and then a questions session. It was all really interesting and an amazing experience. Afterwards we made out way over to the Kanzleramt where we would be meeting Angela Merkel. We waited there for a pretty long time, and there was another reception with food and drinks, and then we all got into a group and waited for the Chancellor to come. Once she arrived some people really freaked out (a few even cried). She gave a short speech for us and then a CBYX student put on a performance for all of us. Afterwards we took a lot of pictures and then she went back to work. Afterwards we were able to take a tour of the building (apparently something not everyone can do!) and got some amazing views of Berlin. Afterwards AFS all went out to dinner at an Indian restaurant and then back to the hostel. It was a long but amazing day, and definitely a once in a lifetime experience.
Saturday was all AFS activities and we spent the whole day at the hostel, except for a couple of hours of free time. At night we had an AFS "prom" and then the next morning we all headed back to our host families.
Overall Berlin was absolutely incredible, but it would have been great to have a little more time to see more things... We were really busy the whole time and for a lot of people it was their only chance to see Berlin, so it would have been nice to have an extra day or so.

It's unbelievable that I only have two weeks left... It's going to be really busy and definitely very sad, but I'll make the best of it. I think I'll post another blog once I get home about leaving and the DC camp. There's definitely a lot of mixed emotions relating to going home. I'm really sad to be leaving, but at the same time so excited to see my friends and family again. I'm so happy that I got to have this experience, and I'm so grateful for my host family and for AFS for making this possible for me.

Spring and 2 Months

Frühling

I realize I haven't posted anything in a few months... But here's a quick update!

It's finally spring and starting to get really warm... Although the past week has been pretty rainy and sometimes still a bit cold. It's completely insane that I have exactly 2 months left. I got my return details a couple of months ago and will be flying back to D.C on July 5th :( Definitely going to be very, very bittersweet. I can't believe it's already been 8 months... Anyway excited for the warmer weather and all of the plans I have for my last couple of months.

I took a day trip a couple of weeks ago with my host family to the Rhine Falls in Switzerland (right on the border pretty much) and to Constance and Lake Constance... The weather was amazing and it was all really beautiful... We took a boat to a little island thing in the middle and walked to the top. Looks smaller in photos but definitely was pretty impressive. Afterwards we went to Constance and walked around and had something to eat and then went to Mainau Island which is a garden island, pretty much a botanical garden on an entire island (not that it's huge). Things just started blooming so it was really beautiful. They have a huge rose collection which is definitely incredible once they bloom. They also have a butterfly house and other greenhouses. Unfortunately the visibility that day wasn't good, but otherwise there's an incredible view of the Alps over Lake Constance.

I also took a day trip to Freiburg two weeks ago to look at a program at the university in Freiburg. I was thinking about studying there, and the city is beautiful, but I don't think the program is for me. We drove through the Black Forest on the way back which was really beautiful. Even saw the (second) largest cuckoo clock in the world. I'm visiting Edinburgh this weekend to look at the university, which I deferred from last year. I also applied to two colleges in Holland, in Amsterdam and in Maastricht. Not really sure what I'll end up deciding on, but I think I'll end up going to either Edinburgh or Maastricht. But who knows... Anyways have a lot planned for the next couple of months, Edinburgh, North Sea, end of stay CBYX camp in Berlin.... Time is really flying. I'll be sure to post at some point in June after my end of stay camp and vacation.

I haven't taken so many photos recently but here are a few!

Oh Frühlingsfest has been happening the past few weeks... Like Oktoberfest but in Spring! Got another use out of my dirndl :)

Time is flying...

So I somehow managed to go about 2 months without posting... I wrote up a post a few weeks ago but so much is always happening that I never got around to actually posting it.. Sorry!
It's insane that it's already pretty much mid March... I hit my 6 month mark on March 6th, which means I now have under 4 and a half months left here... Time is moving way, way, way too fast. As it usually does, February went by really quickly, but it we also had a week off for Fasching so that's probably why. Fasching or Karnival was the second weekend of February I believe... It starts here the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, and lasts through the weekend. There was something to do in my town the whole weekend, and on Saturday there was a parade. Everyone dresses up, kinda like Halloween except also really different. I met my friends on Saturday before the parade and then we watched it all together. I was dressed up (kind of) like a tiger. People who participate in the parade threw candy, confetti, and even at one point hay at the onlookers. They also have paint and stamps that they just kind of randomly put on peoples faces. They also sometimes takes people (mostly girls I think) and just kind of bring them along in the parade. It was overall a really fun day and it's pretty unfortunate that we don't have something like that in the U.S.
Over vacation we went back up north to stay with my host family's family. It was really nice, and we got to take some day trips which was really cool. We visited Köln/Cologne and climbed up the dom, which was definitely a lot shorter than the one in Ulm. The views of the Rhine were so pretty, even though the weather wasn't the best. We also went to Essen and visited a huge museum about Ruhrgebeit/The Ruhr. There was so much in the museum, from human and natural history to old artifacts, and it would takes days I think to look through everything. On our way back, we stopped at the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz, where the Moselle River meets the Rhine. The monument there is huge, the picture doesn't do it any justice. We took a gondola/lift thing (I have no idea what it's called) to the other side of the river to a looking point. It was raining but the views were still amazing. After that we drove along the Rhine towards the Lorelei. We stopped for lunch in Rudesheim, which was really pretty, but I forgot my camera in the car... I'll be back soon though. We drove to the Lorelei, which had a spectacular view over the Rhine and the surrounding area.

I was back in school a couple of weeks, then left on Tuesday the 3rd for Hamburg for my mid-stay CBYX/PPP camp. I had already had my normal chapters mid-stay in January, but the one in Hamburg was with half of the other CBYXers and was also for 6 days. I was the only one to fly there, but it was a lot more convenient and cheaper, and only took an hour... It took around 7 for a couple of other people taking trains. It was so, so, great to see some of the other CBYXers again, and the camp was so fun. We all stayed in a hostel together where we had dinner and other AFS orientation activities. We had a lot of free time to explore the city on our own (which pretty much just included shopping and getting lost a lot). The weather was pretty bad most of the time, but last 2 days were pretty warm and even sunny. We spent most of the time doing things around the city. On the first day we took a tour of the Rathaus/Town hall, which was so beautiful. We took a boat tour of the harbor and a long walking tour of the St. Pauli district (interesting but it was freezing and pouring rain the entire time). We also visited the Auswanderermuseum/ Emigrant Museum, which was really interesting and reminded me of a smaller Ellis Island. We visited the Gängeviertel, which is pretty much an "occupy" area in Hamburg filled with art and artists, so that was really interesting to see. We also took a tour that touched upon homeless issues in Hamburg. It was led by two former drug addict/homeless men, and they told their story which was really interesting and sobering. There's a magazine in Hamburg that can be sold by homeless to help them get back on their feet, and this is how they both achieved that. We visited different homeless shelters around the city and they basically just talked to us about their experiences with homelessness. It wasn't a tour I would typically take, but it ended up being really informative and interesting.  Overall the mid-stay camp was amazing and I can't wait to see all of the other CBYXers in Berlin in June!

It's insane to think about that I have only a few months left, so that just means I have to make the most of it. I'll be sure to write another post next month!

The pictures are out of order but here ya go:
